In the case of engraving, a print of desirable shape and depth will be generated on the surface of the material. There are several possibilities of engraving:           
- plane engraving, where the depth of the print is even throughout the whole picture    
- relief engraving, where the darker spots on the picture will be engraved deeper than the lighter
- seal engraving, where the picture will be engraved in mirror image
